Hurricane Preparedness: Pets!
Having a plan, knowing where you’re going and how you are getting there are all very important parts of hurricane preparedness. Another important part is preparing on behalf of your pets.
Your pet is part of your family and it is your responsibility to make arrangements for them. Emergency services are not equipped with the resources to rescue, board and care for your pets. Have a plan on their behalf whether that plan is to take them with you or to transport them to a boarding facility or other safe location. Check ahead and confirm that pets are allowed where you intend to go.
Pack for your pets. Include a pet carrier, crate, food, water, medication, toys and bedding so that you can meet their needs until they are able to return home. Providing ‘comfort items’ such as favorite toys, bedding or blankets might help lower the stress on your pet and make the evacuation more comfortable. Be sure to have a harness/collar and leash for dogs so that you can safely walk them as needed. Also bring shot records from your veterinarian.
Saving the Whole Family is a disaster preparedness guide made available by the American Veterinary Medical Association. This FREE brochure is filled with tips and is available to the public while supplies last. You can pick your copy up from the Port Arthur Police Department front desk. ... See MoreSee Less
